Information for families with children

We are now offering the opportunity for families with children over the age of 2 to access our private therapy service.

We are now offering the opportunity for families with children over the age of 2 to access our self-funded private therapy service.

In the past, we have received lots of enquiries about how we can support older children and we are therefore delighted that we can now offer this additional opportunity and choice for children, young people, parents and their families.

Where appropriate, we offer the opportunity for families to book self-funded private therapy sessions for their child. These sessions are for children over the age of 2 who have been given a diagnosis of cerebral palsy.

All our self-funded private therapy sessions will be conducted by one of our highly specialist therapists who all have extensive experience working with children and young people who have cerebral palsy. The sessions will focus on your child or young person's needs, helping them to move towards greater levels of participation in the things they need and want to do, and will build your confidence in carrying out activities at home.

We are pleased to be able to offer therapy sessions at our Children’s Centre in Cardiff, or alternatively, we can carry out the sessions virtually so that you can attend remotely from your home.

Below you can find out more information about the different self-funded therapy sessions that we offer, and how to go about accessing this service.

How to enquire

To find out more about this service or discuss the different self-funded private therapy options currently available at Cerebral Palsy Cymru. Please click the link below and complete our short enquiry form.

What is an Initial Consultation?

An initial consultation is an initial session of up to 1 hour in length which includes a discussion and assessment of you and your child or young person's current needs, treatment, and advice from one of our specialist therapists. These sessions are recommended for children who are new to our service, or who have not attended for some time.

What is a Single Therapy Session?

A single treatment session lasts for 45 minutes and will include verbal advice and suggestions for you to continue at home. This is suitable for children or young people known to us and who have attended the centre within the last year.

What is a 5 session Therapy Block?

Our 5 Session Therapy Blocks consist of five 45-minute therapy sessions over several days or weeks.

Intensive periods of therapy often provide you and your child or young person the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of their needs and consolidate changes under the guidance of a therapist.

What is a Therapy Report?

A written report can be provided on request and will include a summary of what was discussed in your therapy session/block as well as a record of suggested activities with which to continue at home.

Cost: £500

(Please note: no written report will be provided unless requested when booking.)

Is a private therapy session right for me and my child?

Our self-funded private therapy sessions are typically for children over the age of 2 who have been given a diagnosis of cerebral palsy.

Our highly specialist therapists all have extensive experience working with children and young people who have cerebral palsy and can tailor the sessions to ensure they are age-appropriate and accessible for all abilities.

We also kindly request that you inform any of your current NHS practitioners that you will be attending sessions with us.

If you would like to discuss your child or young person's needs and the most appropriate option for therapy, we would be happy to discuss this with you further.

What is the difference between a virtual and face-to-face therapy session?

All our therapy sessions are conducted in an age-appropriate way by our team of specialist therapists.

Our face-to-face sessions are delivered at our children's centre in Llanishen, Cardiff. Alternatively, we can offer our therapy sessions virtually so that you and your child or young person can attend the therapy session from the comfort of your own home if this is more suitable.

Our virtual appointments use MS Teams and links will be sent to you when your appointment is confirmed and paid for. We suggest testing the link and your device prior to the appointment to ensure you have access to the camera and microphone.

What is your cancellation policy?

We aim to provide all our service users with the best possible service and to achieve this we need your help. If you are unable to keep your appointment, please make every effort to cancel it well in advance so that it may be offered to someone else. Non-attendance and cancellations at short notice without a valid reason deprives other patients of essential therapy services.

Once a therapy block has been offered, all appointments must be confirmed and paid for by the date stated on the offer letter (at least 7 working days in advance of first appointment), otherwise they will be deemed to be declined and will be offered elsewhere.

Once a therapy block has been paid for and confirmed, the following cancellation policy applies:

We understand that life can throw the unexpected at us sometimes, which may result in you needing to change your plans. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, we kindly ask that you provided us with at least 7 working days’ notice.

To cancel an appointment please email therapy@cerebralpalsycymru.org stating the date and time of the appointment, patient name and reason for cancellation.

If you are unable to attend at short notice on the day due to illness or emergency, please email therapy@cerebralpalsycymru.org and marcr@cerebralpalsycymru.org so we can make the necessary arrangements on the day.

If notice is not provided as specified above, the full session fee will be charged.

N.B. Charges set out above may be reduced / waived at the discretion of Cerebral Palsy Cymru in exceptional circumstances.

If you are going to be late to your scheduled appointment, please inform us by telephone as soon as possible (Main Reception: 02920 522600 with answerphone). We cannot guarantee that we will be able to honour the full length of your original appointment. When you arrive late for your appointment the receptionist will arrange for a member of the therapy team to come and speak to you. You may have to wait until someone is available. For some appointments we may be unable to see you if you are late. If this happens, the full session fee will be charged. (N.B. Charges set out above may be reduced / waived at the discretion of Cerebral Palsy Cymru in exceptional circumstances.)

Replacement of individual cancelled sessions

Wherever possible, and with the notice period specified above, we will try to rearrange an individual cancelled session so that it falls within the same block. Where this is not possible for any reason a session will be added to the next or end of the block of treatment.

Where single sessions are cancelled (according to the above terms) that are not part of a block of therapy, we will try and replace it with a new session as soon as possible.

Cancellations by Cerebral Palsy Cymru

If any cancellation is made by Cerebral Palsy Cymru e.g. in case of staff illness, centre closure in severe winter weather conditions or other circumstances outside of the control of the centre, no charge will be made to you, and you will be refunded for the cancelled session/block cost.

After our first therapy session, I left Cerebral Palsy Cymru’s children’s centre with something nobody had previously dared give me for my little boy. I left with hope.
