About this event
Do something epic in 2023 and take on the Welsh 3 Peaks Challenge in aid of Cerebral Palsy Cymru.
Climb to the top of Snowdon, Cadair Idris and Pen-Y-Fan (a total of 2,334 metres of ascent) and take in some of Wales’ most spectacular landscapes as you trek the 27.4km route.
This is a challenging mission and will require a very good level of fitness. Starting at 5 am, you and your teammates accompanied by two qualified mountain leaders will tackle 3 of Wales’ toughest summits in under 24 hours.
This is our inaugural Welsh 3 Peaks Challenge, and we are searching for 10 brave individuals to take on the challenge to help us raise vital funds – could one of them be you?
Event itinerary
Please note: this is a proposed itinerary and exact timings will be confirmed closer to the date.
Day 1: - Departure – Thursday 29th June
Arrive at Cerebral Palsy Cymru’s Children’s Centre in Llanishen and be ready to depart at 11:00am. The afternoon will be spent travelling up to Snowdonia YHA in a minibus, making one or two short stops en route. We will arrive at Snowdonia YHA at approximately 6:00pm, where a hot evening meal will be provided.
Day 2: Trek Day – Friday 30th June
1st Summit – Our day starts at 4:00am, with breakfast provided by our support crew. Our challenge will then begin at 5:00am on Snowdon, the tallest peak in Wales with a height of 1085 metres. For our ascent route, we will be starting at Pen Y Pass, and will make our way up the eastern route via the Pyg Track, catching the early morning sunrise as we set off. Reaching the summit typically takes 2-3 hours and your early morning efforts will be rewarded with incredible views from the highest peak in Wales! On clear days, you can see sights of England, Scotland, Ireland and Isle of Man. Enjoy a brief pause at the summit to refuel and take some photos before heading back down the mountain. Once we reach the base of the Watkin Path, the mini bus will pick us up before transferring the group to Cadair Idris.
2nd Summit – We will arrive at Cader Idris, at approximately 12:00pm. Our route will begin via the southern side of the mountain, as we trek up the Minnfordd Path. Cader Iris is known for being named after the legendary giant Idris Gawr, who according to Welsh folklore, used to sit on the top of the mountain! Once we reach the top of the mountain, we will be met with a stunning vista of Snowdonia and the hills of Shropshire, among plenty of other glacial lakes, open fells, and mossy wooded gorges. After we’ve completed this second trek, we will depart from Cadair Idris car park at approximately 5:00pm and travel to Pont ar Daf car park for the ascent of our final peak, Pen Y Fan.
3rd Summit– We will arrive at Pen-Y-Fan at approximately 8:00pm. Whilst Pen-Y-Fan is the smallest peak in the challenge, it is certainly not to be underestimated! As the tallest peak in South Wales, it stands at a height of 886m, and its name means ‘top of this place’. We will trek upwards via the Beacons Way route. Once we have celebrated reaching the final peak on our epic quest, we will head back down to Pont ar Daf car park and travel back to our original pick-up point at our Children's Centre in Llanishen, arriving at approx. 11:30pm.
